Bate-bolas also known as Clóvis, is a cultural legacy that has been passed down for generations in Rio de Janeiro’s suburbs.

Despite its deep roots, the practice has long been stigmatized and dominated by men. But Vanessa and Brilhetes de Anchieta are changing that.

As one of the first all-female Bate Bola groups, they are carving out space for women and the LGBTQIA+ community in a tradition that once excluded them.

With over 30 women, including children, they are proving that preserving culture also means evolving it. Their presence challenges long-standing gender roles while ensuring that this vibrant expression continues to thrive.
