Hair is political.

After growing tired of having to perform to fit into barbershops—spaces that are often unwelcoming to the LGBTQIA+ community, Matheus Teles, a gay and Indigenous man, opened his barbershop in Mangueira, in Rio’s North Zone.

Every haircut is built on collaboration. Matheus creates space for trust, openness, and expression, offering LGBTQIA+ clients a place where they can be seen as they are. Styles like Nevou and Animal Print were born in Rio’s suburbs but only gained acceptance after breaking racial and social barriers to reach luxury salons. Recognizing spaces like Matheus’s means acknowledging where these styles really come from.
